Fio Fa returns to his Pear imprint for U Drink, U Pay; his euphoric new EP of Prog-’e’ thumpers and Garage-y shufflers, all in his inimitable style.

U Drink, U Pay is Fio’s most ambitious track yet; patiently layering the prog with a steady finesse until its unbridled giddiness can’t contain itself. Inevitable climactic bliss ensues, before bringing us right back to do it to us all over again. The euphoria is firmly on tap, and it’s simply irresistible.

On the flip, Turizmo speeds ahead in a surprising 2-Step turn. Bright organ chords, a chunky bassline and hefty doses of swing amount to a sunny UKG belter in pure Fa style. Gateway To A 50 Bag then sees us out, a subversive rave-y skanker fit with killer melodies and sweeping synths before a delightful switch-up recalibrates its course in brilliant manner. A thrilling end to another knockout release from the boss-man.

Excelsior Ruth is a composer, DJ and producer born in the North-East of England but who currently resides in South London. On her eponymously titled debut, she combines a life-long love of euphoric trance with echoes of her live performances as exlRuth, which incorporate sound recordings, drone, traditional choral music and the makina backdrop of her youth. Embedded in community heritage, it’s a record that probes connections between the classical and contemporary. Gossamer harp drifts across time on ‘Haunt’, leading to the affecting arpeggios, strings and high BPMs of ‘Dream Of Night’, programmed, as much of the EP was, on classic 90s synthesisers, including the Roland JP8080 and Quasimidi Rave-0-Lution 309. Drinkwater’s ‘Dawn Return mix’ reduces ‘Dream Of Night’ down to a moment of 6am E-motion, limbs weaving through dry ice like mist on long-forgotten moors.A cathedral of angelic voices swells in ‘Dream Of You’, their hymn to oceanic feeling rooted to earth by a raining cascade of kicks. And ‘Sleepy Hollow’ journeys further into deep, unspeakable bodily knowing, pushed and pulled between propulsion and stasis as fizzy high hats and restless melodies weave through shrouds of ambient pads.Words by Joe Roberts.
"Synesthesia" by Erdmann marks the third release under the Trance Atlantyk label, a burgeoning entity emerging from the vibrant music scenes of Berlin and Warsaw, formed just last year. Hailing from Poland's dynamic electronic music landscape, Erdmann is swiftly making a name for himself with his innovative fusion of progressive house, proto trance, and techno. Renowned for his ability to craft immersive sonic experiences, the producer enthralls audiences with his ethereal melodies, pulsating rhythms, and evocative atmospheres. His debut vinyl release, the four-track EP "Synesthesia," offers a transcendental journey through both space and time.Opening the EP is "Re-Experience," a hypnotic dance anthem boasting a pulsating bassline and ethereal melodies. This track cleverly utilizes familiar dance music motifs to deliver a pristine example of modern progressive house. "The Dolphin Track" plunges listeners into deeper waters, its slower tempo enveloping them in a sea of shimmering synths and entrancing rhythms reminiscent of trance's early days. Next, "Inside Your Mind" delves into the psyche's inner workings, navigating the labyrinth of the subconscious with haunting melodies and tantalizing vocal snippets. Its mesmerizing allure blurs the boundaries between reality and imagination, all while retaining its irresistible dancefloor appeal. Concluding the EP is the titular track "Synesthesia," a sonic odyssey seamlessly blending progressive house and proto trance elements to create a deep, enthralling peak-time anthem.
Denizens of the Oyster Cult, rejoice. Elusive dancefloor operator S.O.N.S has followed last year’s compilation cameo up with the deadliest of full debuts.Booting off with some rough 'n ready gear, "Drive" is the latest chapter as S.O.N.S undergoes his metamorphosis into a more brooding entity. The esteemed Junction Records and Junction Forest proprietor oscillates between tunnelling acid techno and a darkwave-indebted workout somewhat reminiscent of Dutch pioneer Das Ding. Three night-stalking club trax rooted in ominous portent.Trading the gentler touch and sound sensitivity of releases past for something tougher, and meaner, but there aren’t any diminishing returns. Quite a departure from the introspection of that aforementioned compilation appearance while retaining the transcendent qualities that always typified his work.Written, produced, mixed by S.O.N.S Illustration by S.O.N.S Design by Susanne Janssen.Mastered and cut by Kassian Troyer at Dubplates & Mastering.Distributed by One Eye Witness.
Spooky and minimalistic house from the one and only Shonky perfectly matching the label’s aesthetics.
Following up on the Hayal EP in 2023, Dutch techno refractor Konduku makes a welcome return to Bitta with another four cuts of prismatic club fuel. Throughout his consistent output Ruben Uvez applies non-standard ideas to the techno formula, toying with rhythm and eliciting transcendental atmospheres from unusual patterns. This mode of exploration continues unabated on Gazoz, with the title track in particular leaning on a full-frequency, one-note synth pulse which dominates the mix and becomes truly hypnotic in its relentless presence. In the wrong hands it would come off garish, but ?vez knows how to weave subtlety around such forthright sonics to create a sublime sonic experience. 'Mikros' aligns with Konduku's more recognisable palette -- taut, bell-like rhythmic threads that balance delicacy and impact while tunnelling into mysterious, introspective zones. Aimed squarely at the heads-down section of the night, 'Luna' strides forth with a decisive dub techno palette and finds space for expression and progression in the most linear of arrangements. In true B2 style, 'Inici' rounds the EP out with a more fractured approach centred on reversed kicks and psychoactive arps riding wide and slow pitch bends for a mind-melting finish running at a formidable pace. As well as showcasing Konduku at his best, the sound on Gazoz serves as an extension of Bitta boss DJ Nobu's own particular tastes in techno -- brain-tweaking machine music crafted from supple parts, honed for the club without being limited by it.
Turnend Tapes first vinyl offering beyond the realms of the club emerges Peculiar Glow Vol.1. An EP of radiant atmospherics from multiple artists prescribing sonic esoterism. Shell Company introduce the record with ‘Pearl’, an exhibition of their indelible sound, nurtured by the Manchester underground; inducing intoxication through twang of guitar and stunning spoken word whilst grimy, glitched-out soundscapes modulate and vaporise. Sailingwing follows with ‘Splendid Isolation’. A kaleidoscopic dream sequence sounding like a distant relative to Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden. One that is voltaic and woozy drifting with spectral timbre.Bringing side A to a close with their track ‘I Might’ is Infant, another artist flourishing in Manchester’s fertile scene. A soft and hopeful slice of blissed out synth pop showcasing Infant’s mesmerising instrumentation, voice and lyricism.Das Wettbüro’s ‘Abendtarif’ opens side B with an auditory bath of cool electronics intersecting the styles of different eras and geographies. Ultra kinetic and slick, the group make a visionary contribution to the rich lineage of Krautrock before it. Zoe Couppe & sigh nova offer up a sublime composition of glistening electronics and granular field recordings that mirror the spoken musings of aquatic motion amongst other abstractions. With mythic air, ‘Memoria Fluida’ guides this collection of music to its conclusion.Peculiar Glow’s first volume is a touchstone for endeavours to follow under this project and we are delighted to share the result of what has been a lengthy but exceptionally rewarding process.
