This is the genesis point for Yugambeh Country (Burleigh, Queensland) based imprint 100 FOLD. Forward facing yet with a respectful, almost romantic eye tuned into the deepest echelons of electronica and dance music so desperate for a revisit. Healthy doses of deep, esoteric atmosphere and high-tech abstraction are treated with care and precision equally.

We are softly welcomed with the peaceful entrance of Development (Imposter Syndrome B Side Mix), guided by native fauna field recordings and foley. Electronic dub energies are glued together with tropical island paradise level ambience, waves of effortlessly full pads and lush bass pulses evaporate into mist. A moment of reflection and centring before a second act of chunky and bombastic beats, dancing in harmony with the soothing nature of it’s humble beginnings. Prototrek brings us a fat slice of deep space pastoralism, high functioning trip-hop from the deepest reaches of the cosmos. The soundtrack to an interstellar journey towards unknown frontiers and endless paradigm-shifting possibilities. starting off the B side is Liquid Rats (Environment Mix). True downtempo and psybient of the highest order. Tranquil, dynamic and effortless.

Finishing up on the B side is the insanely warehouse ready Beach Goth (A.D.H.D Re-work). Straight up late 90’s/early 00’s electro and big beat with genius level intellect, a “Need For Speed: High Stakes” type beat. High octane drums, nitrous infused breaks and laser accurate bleeps all riding a bassline with infinite torque. Sounds for hitting the accelerator deep in the night and not looking back. Big “Tokyo Drift” energy on the tubular bells near the end, sending this piece high into the stratosphere. Full dichotomous flip on the records finisher; Smoking With Laraaji. Digital whip-birds announce your arrival at this atmospheric finale, warm synthetics and naturalistic percussion closes this pentalogy in the only way that feels right. With a sense of triumph and optimism. Something we could all use more of in our lives.

This record is a deeply human experience, meticulously crafted by the artist and lovingly mastered by Smallville records alumni Moomin. The energy of the natural, terrestrial moments are shared effortlessly with an otherworldly, cosmic vision of a utopic rave society.

Kenn-Eerik is an Estonian versatile sound artist and musician working in Tallinn. His passion for music began in early childhood when he witnessed accordion playing as a six-year-old boy. Encouraged by this musical experience, he learned various instruments over the years, engaged in choir singing, and participated in the activities of several bands. Even today, he is part of a band called Käsi which was created with friends from teenage times.Kenn-Eerik became interested in electronic music during high school when he composed the first songs – inspired by dubstep and dub. Wanting to cultivate his technical music skills, he went to study sound technology at the Viljandi Academy of Culture. Along with his studies in Viljandi, he acquired his first drum machines and synthesizers, which, in addition to his personal creative activities, were also used to compose music for dance performances. While his first DJ sets consisted mainly of dubstep, with minor detours into the areas of techno and house, by now this relationship has become the opposite – techno and house beats have become more concrete and present, but the influences of dub and dubstep are still there. Over the years, Kenn-Eerik has played in several Tallinn clubs such as Ulme, Ups, Asum, Uni, Hall, etc. His live debut took place at the festival Kuru Plirr (2015). In addition to DJ and live sets, cooperation with several theaters operating in Estonia has deepened over time, where he has composed soundscapes based on original music.Kenn-Eerik’s music can be characterized as a search for a certain state. His sound language is centered on organically flowing synth lines and minimalistic rhythms, which combine the deeper areas of techno, house, ambient and experimental music. Kenn-Eerik does not directly set genre restrictions for himself, nor does he limit himself in the choice of choosing instruments – anything that inspires and drives will be used, starting from analog synthesizers and ending with recorded sewer pipe sounds.
A box of old photographic slides uncovered at a house clearance centre with a £5 asking price. On the slide's a collection of shots from the 60’s–70’s: British rural life plus various trips around Europe and a trip to the US. The lives of Bill, Jean and Edith (and Pippi the budgerigar). The relationship between the three is unclear but they seem to live together—or at least spend a lot of time together—they seem close. They like to travel and garden. What became of these people? Presumably, they have since passed away given their apparent ages in the pictures and the dates scrawled on the slides and boxes. What happened? How did these slides come to be here and were there no family or friends that wanted to claim them?Initially, the discovery feels uncomfortable, intrusive, upsetting even. The lives of these people—whoever they were—were lovingly recorded, only for the resulting documentation to be discovered decades later in a musty, tattered box, buried amongst other people's ex-belongings. It feels sad. Considerations on the transient, the ephemeral. It feels inescapable that—regardless of intention—this is in some way a commentary on the value of a life. On the value of Bill, Jean and Edith's (and Pippi’s) lives. But studying the slides in more detail it is clear that the 3 subjects shared many happy times and experiences. They are always smiling and there appears a sense of genuine camaraderie and affection between them. A passion for photography too.So should we be sad that these lives are seemingly forgotten? That £5 is the asking price for the physical documentation of years of adventures? Or satisfied that the imagery represents lives happily lived and shared. The value of these physical items (ie the slides themselves) is not equal to the value of the actual lived experiences of the subjects or the lesson that Bill, Jean, Edith (and Pippi) can teach us. Realising this provides an invitation to recognise a simple truth: the value of a life is in how it is lived in the moment. Exist and enjoy it—if you can—because in the face of impermanence that’s all we can really do. In the moment neither the beginning nor the end really exist.Petteril (James Gilbert) has been creating audio collages and improvisations with these concepts in mind. The music is not so much about the slides or the people on the slides, (although both the imagery and the music evoke a kind of nostalgia) but concerned with the whole philosophical discourse that ensued. Improvisation (with various instruments, physical, analog and digital) is a key consideration based on the aforementioned theme of being in the moment. Generative elements also represent that transience and the fleeting nature of moments coming and going, flowing from one moment to the next. These evolving beds of sound and improvisations coupled with Tape loops, field recordings and more are chopped, layered and collaged, processed, layered, collaged and processed again.
SAIS005.5 — a companion piece to the PMA EP by B-2DEP’T released on SAISEI earlier this year — is a unique one-sided 10” EP featuring a remix by Uruguayan producer Z@p. The Phonoteque resident reworks ‘BSMH’ with a classic 80s electro beat and bassline, funking up the groove for all the breakdancers in the crowd. The original vocodered lyrics — “Body/Sonic/Mental/Health” — resonate today as much as they did back in 1993, acting as a mantra for a new rave generation.
