Vimana takes flight with Aprieta: a collection of polyrhythmic dance tracks produced by Phran. The EP is the physical manifestation of a movement started in 2015 with gatherings in Barcelona and Berlin and was composed in collaboration with friends and artists residing around Barcelona’s Poblenou district. The tracks on side A contain restrained grooves with deep dembow jams. ‘Aprieta’, ‘Mazatech’ and ‘Sons’ feature collaborations from oma totem (Hivern Discs), Tunik (My Own Jupiter) andRibes.Side B starts off with a remix of the title track ‘Aprieta’ by Dengue Dengue Dengue, before providing the mystical club cuts ‘Faylan’ and ‘Syntorama’, featuring ELO (aka DJ Leeon) and Ribes.Mixed by Ribes & Phran. The Vimana label image was crafted by Planet Luke (Klasse Wrecks, Graffiti Tapes). Vimana is distributed by One Eye Witness.
The sixth UFOs outing is another intergalactic adventure in sonic form and this time at the buttons it's New Balaance, a Mexican artist at the heart of a new wave. Space Jungle though is an apt title for this EP, which kicks off with some stylish breaks and nimble basslines overlaid with lush cosmic arps. 'Space Jungle' (feat Parallax Modulators brings a more pensive mood thanks to the sustained chords and deeper grooves, but subtle acid and chattery perc bring it to life. 'Grantourismo' is a lively and dynamic cut with more swirling synth work while 'Redemption' closes down this quartet of excellent explorations with a mix of 90s prog, techno and breakbeats all imbued with plenty of colour.
From its beginnings as a reissue label, Spray has always been guided by an insatiable appetite for proggy dance music. If excavating long-forgotten gems weren’t enough though, the Irishman behind it all emerged from the fever dream that was lockdown a fully-realised producer/DJ entity. Also taking the name for his alias, Spray comes forth with a typically fractal offering. Insistent throb and propulsive, direct drive underpin the A-side. Where ’VT Trad’ opts for nebulous, cosmic detail and shadowy flex, ‘Q3projz’ surfaces a more utopian take on the blueprint. ‘Zippycher’ then comes flush with wide-eyed radiance; a buoyant, lysergic rite primed for collective physical experience. ‘Slipped’, on the other hand, recalls early ‘90s Art Of Trance while sidestepping revivalist tags. Proper third portal business.
Proper 90's Acid Trance feel, limited hand stamped copies!
It was maybe only a matter of time before DJs Luca Lozano and Dawl collaborated on a record, the two artists have been circling each other in orbit for years now. 'Cybernetik Synergy' plays on the virtual space created between the two producers while working online, the tracks on the EP were sketched out, passed back and forth in folders until they were finished...meaning the artists never actually met in person. The result is both bleepy and breaky, its a rave record that takes in the duo's influences and love of old classic dance hits. The theme of technocractic collaboration is developed further by the final (vinyl-only) track, a collection of separate stems from the A1 that enable the listeners to be able remix the tracks themselves and then send in to the label via the QR code on the sleeve.
