Semi Delicious return for their 16th edition with the impressive ‘Asylum Of Love’ VA inviting faces old and new to the imprint. A label noted for bringing together impressive collections of talent, SEMID016 is no exception with contributions from Krywald & Farrer, Gallegos, Tatie Dee, Omar Smadar & DJ Gear, Scarlett O’Malley & label boss, Demi Riquisimo.

The A-side welcomes Krywald & Farrer, Gallegos and Tatie Dee. The release kicks off with ’Seize The Source’ from the aforementioned Krywald & Farrer. A classic house beat with modern, psychedelic flourishes, the track sets the tone nicely for an EP loaded with club ready heaters. Up next is label regular Gallegos with ‘Asylum of Love’, in keeping with the house-centric motif, Gallegos delivers an acid laden, Chicago inspired weapon. ‘For My Niece’ by Tatie Dee wraps up side one on dreamy, Balearic tip.

Omar Smadar & DJ Gear’s ‘Check One’ opens up the B-side. A cruising progressive jam that's certain to be heard throughout the autumn and for the duration of 2023’s club season. Next Rinse FM resident and Club Cowgirl label boss Scarlett O’Malley makes her Semi Delicious bow with the grooving percussive ‘Hey Party People’. Demi himself puts the finishing touches on SEMID016 with a 2023 interpretation of his own ‘Rocking You Internally’ from his own ‘Mirage Over’ EP, released on the same imprint.

POH (Point of Hue): It’s all about colors. Closet Yi sees the world in vibrant hues, as a sonic exploration of her kaleidoscopic vision. Seeing herself as more of an observer than a doer, she testifies her unique perspectives of the  world in each track with all different hues and emotions.Instinctively catchy and affecting, the four track dance EP is full of intricate textures, unexpected harmonies, and subtle sonic flourishes that reveal themselves with each listen. Written and mixed in her hometown, Seoul, the infectious EP is a collective of warm, floating yellow purple molecules in the air with introspective shades of cobalt and sage.As much as she has a wide spectrum of taste, Closet Yi cements her core to its place where the most exciting and new coming artists are now.“POH (Point of Hue)” EP will be released on October 6th under Seoul based label Honey Badger Records.
NYC experimental producer Neud Photo is up next on EYA's LONEWOLF series with a killer 5 tracker named 'Echoes. The EP brilliantly oscillates between various inspirations with a strong machine sound; an incredible and haunting journey into electro, new beat, minimal, and techno.
Parallel Minds’ fifth label release is a major landmark for the Toronto-based label. Not only is it their first full length LP, it is also the debut album from co-founder Ciel, who is also making her first solo appearance on the label since its inception. In 2021, spurred on by a productive creative streak and the economic austerity of pandemic lockdowns, the Xi’an-born and Toronto-based DJ Ciel (real name Cindy Li) applied for grant funding from the government of Canada to write her debut album. Self-proclaimed “DJ first, producer second”, Ciel never thought she would have the self-confidence and desire to write an album. It wasn’t until after spending prolonged time away from clubs & festivals whilst dedicating herself to daily sessions in her studio that she gained the motivation and aspiration to make a musical statement that only an album could express.Since the start of the covid19 outbreak, Ciel, like many other Chinese diaspora people in the West, had felt a great deal of anxiety and pain at the rise of anti-Chinese sentiment and racism in the media — even in her corner of the dance music industry. Tired of expressing her frustrations fruitlessly online, she felt inspired to channel that into her music, to turn something that was filled with hate into a thing of joy and beauty. It was within this context that Homesick began to take shape. After researching the rich history of Chinese instruments, a concept began to form around the album in which she could marry her love of sampling and analogue instruments. Using the eight types of traditional Chinese instruments (silk, bamboo, wood, stone, metal, clay, gourd, and hide) as a guideline, Li began writing each track with a focus on one of the eight. She hired traditional Chinese instrumentalists to play the guzheng and the xiao, whilst purchasing and teaching herself the smaller hand drum instruments like the kuaiban (bamboo clappers), and muyu (temple blocks). With the news that she had successfully been granted funding from Canada Arts Council, she wrote, recorded, arranged, and mixed all nine tracks of her album over the first three months of 2022. More than just highlighting Chinese instruments, the music on this album encapsulates so many musical influences from Ciel’s childhood when she began her lifelong love affair with music. True to her style as a DJ, the LP incorporates a diversity of genres she loves, from drum & bass to house, electro to breaks - even downtempo. What has come out of these sessions is a deeply personal dancefloor record, a true expression of love for Cindy’s culture that came out of a time of relentless chaos, negativity, and uncertainty. Ciel sees her compositions as a distillation of herself — her life experiences, her wide interests and passions, and her often-turbulent emotions. Immersing oneself in the LP feels like listening to the musical confessions of an artist heading towards the peak of their career, who is finally starting to make sense of her artistic identity. What a joy to witness it. credits
B From E, the enigmatic producer from Denmark has been turning heads and rocking parties across Europe, showcasing his amoebic demeanour via his all-encompassing sets and rave-centric soundtracking. The Danish darling has found his sonic home, in deep digging for rave-tinged 90s garage and breaks, and channelling them into his own concoctions, using their educative, lucid inspiration. ‘Amnesia’ is the culmination of his latest musical direction, threading the twines of acid debauchery and old-school beats through a groove-tinted prism. B From E helps you to forget about your future, and live in the hallowed past. The title track ‘Amnesia’ takes no prisoners from the word go. Sitting somewhere on the fence between Gat Decor and Kamaya Painters, the ceaseless melody transforms from phase to phase, thematically touching melodic, acid and trance virtues and encapsulating pure rave sensibility. Track 2 is the oddly named ‘Ootheca’, a downtempo acid-driven creation of polymorphic vitality. Drawing influence from classic 90s house as denoted by the mellifluous chords and arpeggiated keys, the result is a head-nodder of unstoppable nature. Third up is ‘Symetrix’. Cranking the journey into 6th gear, the overtly intense arrangement waxes and wanes, underpinned by pumping percussion and an unapologetic bass refrain. Rounding the EP off is ‘Prophecy’, a deep foray back into the downtempo realm, once more ringing truer than true with B From E’s crystalline 90’s influences and breaks majesty.Let this music soothe you. Nothing we remember is ever forgotten. And everything forgotten is gone. ‘Amnesia’ is the light at the end of your tunnel. Or maybe it's just the beginning.
R.A.N.D. Muzik Recordings welcomes a joint record by Sascha Funke & Niklas Wandt to the label with their take on House, IDM and Balearic.
